Chapter 27: CHUSKIT GOES TO SCHOOL

Important Points which can be asked as ‘Fill in the Blanks’ or ‘MCQs’:

  1. Chuskit was a ten year old girl who could not walk.
  2. Chuskit would see other children laughing & playing on their way to school.
  3. Chuskit wanted to go to school but could not go as her wheel chair could not move on the uneven road.
  4. Her friend Abdul had a good plan for Chuskit.
  5. Chuskit called her father Aaba-le, mother Aama-le and grandfather Meme-le.

Q. 1) Who helped Chuskit to go to school?

Ans) Abdul, headmaster, teachers and children of the school helped Chuskit to go to school.

Q.2) What are the special facilities which every school needs for differently abled children?

Ans) Two special facilities that every school needs for differently abled children are ramps and wheelchairs.

Q. 3) Give Reasons –

A) It was a special day for Chuskit. Why?

Ans)  It was a special day for Chuskit because:

1.  Chuskit was going to school for the first time

2.  Though she was 10 years old, she could not go to school because of her disability.

3. She was waiting eagerly for this special day.

B) Chuskit was very happy on getting a wheelchair. Why?

Ans) Chuskit was very happy on getting a wheelchair because:

  1. Chuskit would not need Aaba-le to carry her everywhere.
  2. She quickly learnt how to wheel her wheelchair.
  3. She learnt how to sit on it and move it back and forth.

C.) Chuskit couldn’t go to school. Why?

Ans) Chuskit couldn’t go to school because:

  1. She could not walk.
  2. Aaba-le could not carry her all the way to school everyday
  3. The road to school was uneven
  4. She could not cross the river.

Q.4) DEFINE & tell the uses

A.) RAMP.

Definition: A sloping surface joining two different levels at the entrance or between floors of a building.

Uses:  Ramp is used to move a wheelchair from one level to another easily. So it is very useful for the wheelchair user and the caretaker

B) WHEELCHAIR

Definition: A wheelchair is a chair with wheels.

Uses: Using a wheelchair a differently abled person can move from one place to another without the help of others by learning to wheel the wheelchair.

How it is operated: The wheels of the wheelchair are operated by the person occupying the chair or by an electric motor or by the caretaker.

C.) WHITE CANE

Definition: A white cane is device used by many people who are blind or visually impaired.

Uses:

  1. A white cane mainly allows its user to scan their surroundings for obstacles.
  2. It is also helpful for other people around in identifying the user as blind or visually impaired and taking proper care.

D.) BRAILLE SYSTEM

Definition: In this system six raised dots are arranged in different patterns, each representing different letters of the alphabet, numbers and even musical notes.

Uses: Blind people can feel and read using the Braille system.

Who invented: Louis Braille, a French educator invented the Braille system.

E.) DIFFERENTLY ABLED PERSON

Definition: Differently Abled person is defined as having lack of normal functioning of physical, mental or psychological processes.

Q.5) How was Chuskit finally able to go to school? (Write in steps)

Ans)

  1. Abdul spoke about Chuskit to the headmaster and the teachers. Everyone got together to make a plan so that Chuskit’s problem could be solved.
  2. One group of children levelled the uneven road.
  3. The other group levelled the area near the river.
  4. The elder children with the help of their teachers made a small bridge with flat pieces of wood so that Chuskit could cross the river on her wheel chair.
  5. The special day came when all the work was done and Chuskti could now go to school.

Q.6) Why do we need to help and care for the old and physically challenged people?

Ans)  We need to help and care for the old and physically challenged people because:

  1. Old and physically challenged people are not healthy and capable enough, to look after themselves.
  2. They may have special needs as they may face certain problems during their lifetime.

For example:

  1. They may be deaf – Unable to hear
    1. They may be mute – Unable to speak
    1. They may be blind – Unable to see
    1. They may be lame – Unable to walk

Q.7) How can we help/ care for the old and physically challenged people?

Ans)

  1. Do not treat their disability as something to be ashamed of.
  2. Be there for them like any other friend.
  3. Stand up for their rights.
  4. People who are young and healthy should look after the old and the weak.
  5. When we see a blind person crossing a road, we should come to help them.
  6. If we see a physically challenged person failing to so something due to their inability, we should try to help them.

Q.8) How can we help differently-abled people?

Ans) We can help differently-abled people in the following ways:

  1. Do not treat their disability as something to be ashamed of.
  2. Be there for them like any other friend.
  3. Stand up for their rights.

Q.9) How do you reach Chuskit’s school from her home?

Ans) Chuskit’s school is not very far from her house.

  1. First, you have to take the big road.
  2. Then walk along the lake.
  3. Cross the river near the poplar trees
  4. After a small climb, you reach the school.
