When the animated film “Frozen” was released last year, no one expected it to become a worldwide juggernaut. “Frozen,” which earned more than $1.2 billion at the box office, is not only the first “princess” movie to make the list of top 10 grossing animated films, even more astonishingly, it is also the No. 1 animated film of all time. Little girls have long been drawn to princesses. My twins were born, the same year the movie was released (2013) and have literally grown up watching the movie. My twins now almost 5, enjoy re-enacting the scene when it comes on and that they never change characters; one twin always plays Elsa, and the other plays Anna. From their dramatic positions on the floor to their giggling while they run around, the twins are spot-on. Hence this summer I wanted to give them a little surprise by making these Elsa-Anna crochet wigs made of beautiful yarn. Continue reading “DIY activity 17: Disney Frozen Elsa & Anna Yarn Wig Hair”

School Admissions (Part 2): Comprehensive Comparison between CBSE and ICSE boards in India

Protected by Copyscape

In my previous post I have noted down the comparative salient features of the common school boards available in India. The choice of board makes a significant difference in the early development of the child and his/her exposure to the kind of education system that we have. In the Indian education system, two of the most recognised boards of education that one gets to opt for are CBSE and ICSE. In this article I have made a chart comparing the detail points between CBSE and ICSE boards in India.

During the admission process of my twin girls I had narrowed down to these two boards, considering that IB and IGCSE boards do not have great reviews in Pune (2016) and also the state board wouldn’t have a good exposure for competitive exams. Having said that it does not mean they are bad or have lesser standard than CBSE and ICSE, but each child has their own individual personality and needs which should complement the board you choose for them. Both my girls have different personalities, one is a studious kind for whom ICSE was better suited and the other is a free spirited artistic one who would do better in CBSE. Lot of other factors made me choose CBSE for both of my kids, which I will discuss in the next article.

Following is the Chart comparing both the boards. Please do click on the link: Comparative chart of CBSE vs ICSE

The selection of a suitable board for your child can make a lot of difference in their early development and level of exposure that they will get. Every parent wants their child to be in an environment which is conducive to their overall growth. Think, analyze and then take a calculated move.

DIY Activity 14: WALL-E and EVE amigurumi plush toys

In the movie WALL-E, in 2805, Earth is abandoned and largely contaminated with garbage, with its people evacuated on giant star liners. Humans have left behind WALL-E robot trash compactors to clean up, however, all have since stopped functioning, except one unit who has gained sentience and is able to stay active using parts from other units. He is a small mobile compactor box with all-terrain treads, three-fingered shovel hands, binocular eyes, and retractable solar cells for power. Although working diligently to fulfill his directive to clean up the garbage he is distracted by his curiosity, collecting trinkets of interest.  EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator), is a sleek robot probe whose directive is to locate vegetation on Earth and verify habitability. She has a glossy white egg-shaped body and blue LED eyes. “WALL·E” is everything we’ve come to expect from Pixar and more- colorful, vibrant, imaginative, exciting, involving, beautiful, and most importantly a film with interesting, involving characters. Most importantly, however, it is perfect entertainment.

Wall E and Eve (in Wall E’s words Evaaa…..) are of  my twin’s favourite cartoon pairs, among their many pretend play toys. WALL-E movie toys are hardly available, especially in India and so tried my hands with amigurumi. The pattern came out quite good for both WALL- E and EVE.
