Chapter 2: EAR TO EAR

Important Points which can be asked as Fill in the Blanks or MCQs:

  1. In the absence of hair on the skin of an animal, there will be no colour and no patterns.
  2. The different patterns on the animals are due to the hair on their back.
  3. Animals that give birth to young ones are called Mammals.
  4. The natural home or environment of a plant, animal or any other organism. Habitat
  5. The small openings in the skull of birds, protected by feathers. Ears
  6. Animals that live on trees. Arboreal
  7. An organ responsible for the sense of hearing and balance. Ear
  8. Elephants, buffaloes have very less hair on their skin to keep them cool.
  9. Different patterns on animals are due to their hair on the skin.
    Birds have ears which are small openings in the skull and are protected by feathers.
  10. The porcupine and hedgehog have pointed spines which  become erect when they sense danger.
  11. Animals like the polar bear and the yaks have thick and furry skin to keep their body warm.
  12. Birds, reptiles and insects lay eggs, which hatch to produce their young ones.
  13. Bats are exceptional animals that can fly.

TYPES OF ANIMAL GROUPS

  1. Terrestrial – Animals that live on land
  2. Aquatic – Animals that live in water
  3. Arboreal – Animals that live on trees
  4. Pet animals– Animals that live with us at home
  5. Domestic animals– Animals that are tamed by man. They live in houses or on farms.

EARS IN ANIMALS

The ear is an organ responsible for the sense of hearing and balance.

Q.1) Give reasons.

A.) Ear is an important organ for living beings. Why?

Ans) The ear is an important organ for living beings because the ear is an organ responsible for the sense of hearing and balance.

B.) Mammals have hair on their skin. Why?

Ans) Mammals have hair on their skin to:

  1. Protect them.
  2. Keep them warm against cold by conserving body heat.
  3. Form pattern and make them unique

C.)The number of tigers is decreasing in India. Why?

OR

Tiger is our national animal, but it is endangered animal. Why?

Ans) The number of tigers is decreasing in India because:

  1. Tigers are killed by hunters and poachers for their bonesand skin.
  2. Trees are being cut and they lose their habitat.

Q.2) Name some animals that have ears which we cannot see.

Ans) Birds, snakes, lizards, frogs and insects.

Q.3) How does the skin help animals?

Ans) The skin of the animals helps them in the following ways:

  1. The skin covers the body of the animals. It protects the internal organs.
  2. It helps to keep our body at the right temperature.
  3. It allows us to have the sense of touch.

Q.4) Give examples to show how different types of skin help different animals.

Ans) Different types of skin in animals:

 Polar bears and YaksThick and furry skin to keep them warm
 Elephant & BuffaloesVery little hair on their skin to keep them cool
 TortoisesShells on their back to protect them from danger
 FishScaly skin to help them swim
 Porcupines & hedgehogsPointed spines that become erect when they sense danger

Q.5) Differentiate mammals and birds.

Difference between Mammals and birds:

 Mammals Birds
 Mammals have hair or fur on their body.1Birds have feathers on their bodies.
 Mammals have paws, hands or hooves to move. (Bats are exceptional mammals that can fly.)2Birds have wings to fly.

Q.6) Define:

1. Habitat

Ans) A habitat is the natural home or environment of a plant, animal or any other organism.

Why it is important?

Habitat provides the organisms that live there with food, water, shelter and space to survive.

2. Extinct animals

Ans) Extinct animals are those species which are no longer living and there will be no more animals alive on earth.

Examples: Dinosaur, Dodo, Quagga, The Great Auk, Green horned Rhino, etc.

3. Endangered animals

Ans) Endangered animals are animals that are in the danger of becoming extinct. An animal is considered endangered or ‘threatened’ when there are very few of them alive.

Examples: Asian elephants, tiger, snow leopards.

Q.7) Why do deer, giraffes, elephants and zebras have very little hair on the body?

Ans) Deers, giraffes, elephants and zebras live in warm areas and have less hair on their body to allow their skin to breathe easily and remain cool.

Q.8) Why do animals have different types of skin patterns?

Ans) Animals have different types of skin patterns because

  • Each animal group is adapted to its specific environment and needs.
  • Different animals have different patterns.
  • These patterns are due to hair on their skin.
